Circumstance

Q: What’s the movie about?

A: A pair of teenage girls (Nikohl Boosheri & Sarah Kazemy) fall in lesbian love in Iran, where it's illegal to be gay.

Q: Who’s in the movie?

A: Nikohl Boosheri, Sarah Kazemy, Reza Sixo Safai, Soheil Parsa, Nasrin Pakkho, Sina Amedson, Keon Mohajeri

Q: Is this movie worth the price of admission?

A: PhotobucketProceed with Caution. Those of you who love truly independent should run to see this movie because you will love it. For the rest of you, I'm going to throw out some keywords, and you can decide for yourself if it sounds up your alley: lesbian teens, oppression, surveillance, religious fanaticism, men controlling women, secret lives, secret clubs, lack of freedom, rape. So, you in?

Q: Will this movie make me laugh?

A: As part of their rebellion, they decide to dub the movie Milk into farsi... but mostly we watch them do the sex scenes.

Q: Will this movie make me cry?

A: More like rise up and fight for these poor Iranians.

Q: Will this movie be up for any awards?

A: Best Foot Rape scene. Did you know that it's possible to rape someone just by rubbing their foot? Well, you do now... Oh, and it also won the Audience Award at Sundance.

Q: How is the Acting?

A: Superb. Every single actor in the film brings something unique and unexpected to their role.

Q: How is the Directing?

A: Very independent. At times it jumps around, leaving scenes abruptly and entering others without warning. You are often left wondering what a scene was doing in the film, and yet you find yourself giving the director the benefit of the doubt, thinking to yourself that it probably needed to be there and you're just a little too dumb to figure out why.

Q: How is the story/script?

A: This is a script of few words. And many long stares. Sometimes too long, bordering on melodrama. But sometimes just right, bordering on letting you in on the storyline.

Q: Where can I see the trailer?

A: Circumstance Trailer

Youth in Revolt

Q: What’s the movie about?

A: A nerdy loser teenager (Michael Cera) gets an alter ego and becomes a juvenile delinquent to get a girl (Portia Doubleday). So what else is new?

Q: Who’s in the movie?

A: Michael Cera, Portia Doubleday, Jean Smart, Steve Buscemi, Zach Galifianakis, Justin Long, Mary Kay Place, M. Emmet Walsh, Erik Knudsen, Adhir Kalyan, Ari Graynor, Fred Willard, Ray Liotta, Rooney Mara, Jade Fusco, Jonathan Bradford Wright

Q: Is this movie worth the price of admission?

A: PhotobucketProceed with Caution. It tries a little too hard to be charming and quirky, and the result is the story of a pretentious, creepy teen who somehow finds a girl who is equally as pretentious as him- only pretty(ish)--, who has a boyfriend so pretentious that even our pretentious hero thinks he's a prick. On the other hand, some of you might be charmed by this film's quirk. I'm not judging you.

Q: Will this movie make me laugh?

A: In all its efforts to be quirky and charming, it's only natural that it should have a few successes in the cleverness department.

Q: Will this movie make me cry?

A: If you believe in making criminals pay for their crimes, you might be upset by how easy the law is on our little juvie friend.

Q: Will this movie be up for any awards?

A: Most big names with most small parts.

Q: How is the Acting?

A: You know how much I love Michael Cera, right?... Well he kind of creeped me out in this one. Although his alter ego- the very cool, very dangerous, and very French, Francois Dillinger-- was an unexpected stretch to see Cera pull off.

Q: How is the Directing?

A: Miguel Arteta seems to be one of those directors who refuses to expand from the indie roots that got him where he is. So despite all the big name actors, this film looks like it was made by a no-name director on a microbudget. But at least this no-name director seems to have majored in animation, so there are some interesting animated interludes.

Q: How is the story/script?

A: The precociousness of the teenagers' dialogue in this movie makes the dialogue in Juno look like Ebonics.

Q: Is there anything else worth mentioning about the movie?

A: There's an animated epilogue that takes place during the credits, so don't leave your seat too fast.

My Sister's Keeper

Q: What’s the movie about?

A: An 11-year-old girl (Abigail Breslin), who was genetically created to be an organ donor for her cancer-ridden sister (Sofia Vassilieva), takes her parents (Cameron Diaz & Jason Patric) to court for the rights to her own body.

Q: Who’s in the movie?

A: Abigail Breslin, Cameron Diaz, Sofia Vassilieva, Jason Patric, Alec Baldwin, Evan Ellingson, Heather Wahlquist, Joan Cusack, Thomas Dekker, David Thornton, Emily Deschanel

Q: Is this movie worth the price of admission?

A: PhotobucketProceed with Caution. What an incredible moral dilemma! Protect your own long future or save your sister's life, over and over again as she quickly approaches certain death? And to put that in the hands of an 11-year-old! I was so excited to sit in the theater as I watched it unfold, not sure whose side to take... And then suddenly, about half way through, the filmmakers completely forget what their premise is, drop the lawsuit storyline, and start meandering off on a melodramatic tangent about how hard life is for the 15-year-old cancer victim.

Q: Will this movie make me laugh?

A: Alec Baldwin is in the film, so he squeezes a little humor out of his parts.

Q: Will this movie make me cry?

A: Almost the whole way through... For the first half. And then you sit there, wondering where the great movie you were watching went.

Q: Will this movie be up for any awards?

A: It seems like Cameron Diaz is angling for one. But I think it'll take a lot more than this film to get the Academy to notice her.

Q: How is the Acting?

A: Excellent, on everyone's part. They all regularly have to cry on cue, and none of them have any difficulty being right there with it.

Q: How is the Directing?

A: It stops too frequently for beautiful collages set to sad songs. Cut, cut, cut!

Q: How is the story/script?

A: It starts off with this interesting voice over that floats from one character to another. But before long, that becomes nothing more than a device used to throw in random scenes that the writer doesn't have to think of clever transitions for, creating a movie that is episodic instead of fluid. And I hate to see a good dilemma get ignored.

Q: Is there anything else worth mentioning about the movie?

A: Whoever was in charge of creating the art that both the cancer victim and her brother lay claim to in the film, is talented.
