Son of No One

Q: What’s the movie about?

A:  Told between flashbacks to 1986 and present day 2002, a boy, who is now a cop (Channing Tatum) must deal with the on-going repercussions of having accidentally murdered 2 people in the tenement he grew up in.

Q: Who’s in the movie?

A:  Channing Tatum, Jake Cherry, Al Pacino, James Ransone, Brian Gilbert, Ray Liotta, Katie Holmes, Tracy Morgan, Juliette Binoche, Lemon Anderson, Ursula Parker, Simone Jones, Peter Tambakis, Karen Christie-Ward, Decorte Snipes, Marilyn dobrin, Johnnie Mae, Roger Guenveur Smith, Michael Rivera

Q: Is this movie worth the price of admission?

A:  PhotobucketStop!  Either everyone in my audience was an idiot or the film didn't make any sense.

Q: Will this movie make me laugh?

A: The funniest part to me were the multiple conversations in the bathroom afterwards as people tried to figure out what they just saw.

Q: Will this movie make me cry?

A:  Sure, maybe if you use the time to think about something sad.  Like a clown.

Q: Will this movie be up for any awards?

A:  Ursula Parker, a young blonde child, who looks like a cross between a young Elle and Dakota Fanning, will likely win All the Roles the Fanning Girls have Grown Too Old to Play.

Q: How is the Acting?

A:  Tracy Morgan will surprise you in this dramatic role-- mostly in that he can do it at all.  Al Pacino is strong and charismatic, despite the fact that his character motivations in pretty much all of his scenes are both unclear and illogical.  And Katie Holmes will impress you with the fact that she's not totally lame.

Q: How is the Directing?

A:  Just about the same as in Dito Montiel's previous film, A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints.

Q: How is the story/script?

A:  The whole story revolves around the mystique of figuring out who the mystery person is who is writing notes in 2002 about the forgotten murders of 1986, and all you can think is, "Who could possibly care about the 16 year old murder of two insane drug addicts who left no loved ones behind?'  Then at the end you find out, and you still don't care.

The Next Three Days

Q: What’s the movie about?

A: When a man's (Russell Crowe) wife (Elizabeth Banks) is incarcerated for a crime he knows she didn't commit, he constructs a plan to break her out of jail himself.

Q: Who’s in the movie?

A: Russell Crowe, Elizabeth Banks, Ty Simpkins, Olivia Wilde, Lennie James, Liam Neeson, Brian Dennehy, Helen Carey, Jason Beghe, Aisha Hinds, Allan Steele, Michael Buie, Moran Atias, RZA, Daniel Stern, Kevin Corrigan, Peyton Grace Allen

Q: Is this movie worth the price of admission?

A: PhotobucketGo! Both the good guys and the bad guys are so many steps ahead of each other, that you get to a point where you're not sure if the good guys are bad or the bad guys are good.

Q: Will this movie make me laugh?

A: There's not a lot of room for humor when you're trying to keep the tension high.

Q: Will this movie make me cry?

A: Not really, but things sure can get awkward when your mom is in prison. And sometimes, it's really hard not to take it out on her.

Q: Will this movie be up for any awards?

A: Paul Haggis, Russell Crowe, and a November 19th release date... probably.

Q: How is the Acting?

A: I love Elizabeth Banks, especially in comedies, but as hard as she tries in some of her difficult dramatic moments, you never forget that she's acting opposite Russell Crowe, and she's just not on his level.

Q: How is the Directing?

A: It starts out dull and boring, much like the lives of the protagonists, and it ratchets up as the suspense builds.

Q: How is the story/script?

A: Paul Haggis is an Academy Award winning screenwriter, and yet there's something about this French remake of Pour Elle that feels like it's simply a translation of the original screenplay. Though, to be clear, that's not an insult to the original film... Which, to be even more clear, I didn't see.

Paranormal Activity

(Guest Review by Russ)

Q: What’s the movie about?

A: A young couple moves into their new house and decides to record the paranormal activity that seems to be escalating as time goes by.

Q: Who’s in the movie?

A: Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat, Mark Fredrichs, Amber Armstrong

Q: Is this movie worth the price of admission?

A: PhotobucketGo! Hey folks, it’s Halloween and time to be frightened, so if you’re searching for a scare-guarantee then look no further than this. With not a drop of blood, serial killer or ghostly figure anywhere in sight, Paranormal Activity uses suspense and our fear of the unknown to create a movie-going experience that will scare the pants off you.

Q: Will this movie make me laugh?

A: Yes. Micah Sloat is goofily charming and funny as the boyfriend most girls will want as their protector and husband.

Q: Will this movie make me cry?

A: That depends, do you usually cry when you discover that you've just crapped your pants?

Q: Will this movie be up for any awards?

A: Best Film Hollywood Could Never-Ever Make in a million years? (But I give Dreamworks credit for buying it and releasing it as is, instead of remaking it with Megan Fox and some star from Gossip Girl.)

Q: How is the Acting?

A: Astonishing. Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat (as “Katie” and “Micah”) are tasked with bringing an ‘everyman’ anonymous quality to their characters and relationship and they almost succeed a little too well. This is all supposed to play out as if watching the found-footage of a real-life average couple that went through something extraordinary and there isn’t a false moment to be found in their performances. The fact you’ve never seen (or heard of) these actors before is a condition of making this film work, but I don’t think Katie and Micah will stay anonymous for very much longer.

Q: How is the Directing?

A: This entire movie is shot from the POV of a digital camera either sitting on a tripod or being carried around by one of the leads, but while that might sound annoying in a sea-sick feeling kind of way, thankfully it's not. It also proves how much more there is to directing than how the director moves the camera because the straightforwardness and documentary-like feel of it only enhance the creepiness. Oren Peli, the director-screenwriter may not have had a lot of resources in making this movie but he still manages to ratchet up the tension and suspense in ways that can only lead to the conclusion that he’s a gifted director with a bright future.

Q: How is the story/script?

A: This movie is so natural in the way it unfolds, it’s easy to forget there even was a script. The conceit of Paranormal Activity is to make you feel as if you’re watching the equivalent of home-movies, but the sequence of events that unfolds is masterful in how it creates escalating fear that never lets up and makes for one of the most rewarding movie-viewing experiences you can hope to have in 2009.

Q: Is there anything else worth mentioning about the movie?

A: In case I haven't made this completely clear: this movie will scare the s**t out of you!

Tell No One

Q: What’s the movie about?

A: Eight years after his wife was brutally murdered, Dr. Alexandre Beck (Francois Cluzet) is still being accused of having killed and beaten her, but he has reason to believe that she is still alive.

Q: Who’s in the movie?

A: Francois Cluzet, Marie-Josee Croze, Andre Dussollier, Kristin Scott Thomas, Marina Hands, Francois Berleand, Nathalie Baye, Jean Rochefort, Gilles Lellouche, Philippe Lefebvre, Florence Thomassin, Olivier Marchal, Guillaume Canet

Q: Is this movie worth the price of admission?

A: PhotobucketGo! This French thriller has enough intrigue, twists and turns to make American filmmakers jealous.

Q: Will this movie make me laugh?

A: Only briefly, when Dr. Beck discovers thug life.

Q: Will this movie make me cry?

A: No, but it could force you to use your rusty old brain and have to think a little bit.

Q: Will this movie be up for any awards?

A: It was nominated for 9 Cesar Awards, which is the French equivalent of the Oscars. It won four.

Q: How is the Acting?

A: The director, Guillaume Canet, started out as an actor, which is evidenced by the distinctively defined characters and the consistently convincing performances.

Q: How is the Directing?

A: At times the hand-held camera work in the chase scenes can be a little heavy handed, but those moments are balanced out by the simple beauty and raw emotion in the look of the rest of the film.

Q: How is the story/script?

A: You're gonna need to pay attention. There's a lot going on, and it's all interconnected. You can try to figure it out, but you won't.
