Machine Gun Preacher

Q: What’s the movie about?

A: The true story of Sam Childers (Gerard Butler), a heroine addict-ex-con who finds God, decides to build an orphanage in Sudan, and becomes a key player in the civil war going on over there.

Q: Who’s in the movie?

A: Gerard Butler, Michelle Monaghan, Michael Shannon, Ryan Campos, Madeline Carroll, Kathy Baker, Souleymane Sy Savane

Q: Is this movie worth the price of admission?

A: PhotobucketProceed with Caution. Despite the action and the guns, this is a message movie about the unsolvable troubles in Africa.

Q: Will this movie make me laugh?

A: The title is the funniest part. Once you get past that it's pretty much all drugs, violence, killing, maiming, and Jesus.

Q: Will this movie make me cry?

A: The situation is really sad.

Q: Will this movie be up for any awards?

A: Movies set in Africa only ever come out at one time of year, and that's Awards Season. As far as their chances at Oscar, they're the second most popular winners after movies about the Holocaust.

Q: How is the Acting?

A: I just have one question: do people in Pennsylvania have southern accents?

Q: How is the Directing?

A: Marc Forster, who is generally known for leaving all emotional moments on the cutting room floor, has his first emotional story with this one. Someone else might have made you cry-- especially considering all the children who lose their parents before their eyes-- but I'm proud of the guy for even showing a little bit of heart.

Q: How is the story/script?

A: It starts a little before the beginning and therefore goes on too long. And it's not the screenwriter's fault that the true story is still completely unresolved, but it doesn't make for a Hollywood ending.

Q: Is there anything else worth mentioning about the movie?

A: The look of the film is hyper-grainy and sometimes out of focus, but I'm not sure if that's because of the cinematography or the theater I saw it projected in.

Q: Where can I see the trailer?

A: Machine Gun Preacher Trailer

Emotion on the cutting room floor...? Have you ever seen FINDING NEVERLAND? KITE RUNNER?

Yes, Finding Neverland is exactly my point. That movie should've been way more emotional than it was-- but it was cold.

Kite Runner is my bad. I forgot he did that one. That was a tear jerker, and also totally awesome. By far the best Marc Forster movie.

Hmm... okay. I guess we differ on FINDING NEVERLAND. That is his favorite film of mine and I ball every time I see it. I find none of it cold.

Never seen MONSTER'S BALL.

His is a hit-and-miss director... for me at least.

Monster's Ball is good, but it's another movie where the parts are stronger than the whole. Not really an emotional film either... despite a lot of emotional moments, and one scene that will hit you so hard that you will never get the image out of your mind.

Loved Monster's Ball. It's part of my personal DVD collection. I'm with you, Mo, about Finding Neverland. It didn't do anything for me. The most entertaining part was drooling over Johnny Depp.

P.S. Hubby and I loved Kite Runner too.
